Neurofeedback

What is it?

What is it used for?Neurofeedback is a computer-assisted learning therapy that helps train brain behavior. It is a painless, non-invasive treatment. The therapist places several sensors on your scalp and/or ears. The sensors detect your brain waves, which are then monitored by an electroencephalogram (EEG) monitor, an amplifier and a computer-based instrument that processes the signals and provides feedback.

During treatment, you are actually using your brain waves to control a video game on the computer screen. The games are very easy to play. You “play” with your brain; there is no controller for your hands. If you produce the right brain wave patterns, the game proceeds, but if you produce the wrong patterns, the game slows down or stops.

Exercising certain brain waves enhances the brain’s innate regulatory mechanisms, meaning that brain functioning becomes more efficient and effective. Through consistent training with the proper intensity and duration, the brain is encouraged to reach a point of self-regulation. This training is very much like exercise for the brain. Ultimately, the training increases your ability to adequately self-regulate, and therefore you experience improvement in your ability to function in many areas.

Why does it work?

BrainNeurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that addresses cognitive symptoms. Neurofeedback protocols and assessment models are based on extensive research and study of the brain and the specific functions of its parts, such as frontal lobes and hemispheres. For example, it is known that the right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for problems in the areas of anxiety, rage, compulsive behaviors, distractibility and even teeth grinding. The frontal lobe of the brain is where the executive functions take place -- the acts of planning, decision-making, and learning from one’s mistakes. The left hemisphere accounts for underarousal problems such as depression, guilt, and inattention. By training the brain to become more efficient in these areas through brain exercises, functioning improves significantly.

What is it used for?

Student at DeskNeurofeedback, which is also known as EEG biofeedback, is used for many conditions and symptoms in which the brain is not working as well as it could. These include:

ADD/ADHD
anxiety
depression
conduct disorder
migraines
chronic pain
teeth grinding
stomach pain
  insomnia
autism
OCD
anger/rage
learning disabilities
seizures
frequent headaches
